The reality of the first progressives was harsh and unforgiving, they were for the most part morally justifiable in their actions to change things. I do not question that. Times however change, and it's not really progressive to rehash old tired ideas. Is it?
The progressive movement was a social construct of the nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. It was brought about by the glaring inequities apparent in an emerging industrialized world. It's claimed, that it comes forth from the same intellectual spring, that started the reformation and enlightenment. But like many ideologies, it's out lived it's usefulness. It has turned upon itself, and become what it once fought to overcome. An oppressive, totalitarian overwhelming monolith, with far too much influence on the affairs of others, not interested with being interfered with. The greatly expanded powers and involvement of a federal government in so many aspects of our lives, has replaced the large trusts, the Monopolies, the Robber Barons. The federal government controls more capital than the 1000 richest men in the world, times ten or more. The billionaire mayor of New york must look at his total worth as insignificant next to the yearly budget of the city he runs.
Was that the goal of progressives? An all powerful government, Federal, state and local. If so, please point out when absolute power, stopped corrupting absolutely. Please specify a date time and place of occurrence.
Progressives (to advance various unspecified ideologies) have now largely placed their own dogma over reality. There has been, and are still, Republican and Democratic progressive members of our society. Progressiveness, is hard to pin down to any unified principle or political ideology. The one thing that is common to all progressives, is change. And the ever present accompanying claim, that it's (their progressive memes) that are the only real choice that can be made, and they (progressives) are on the moral side of the equation, and their opponents are not.
While some change is inevitable, other changes should be avoided if possible. When finding oneself in a frying pan, leaping into a fire, is change, but other options should be explored completely before taking the leap.
Che Guevara is still for some reason, in this day and age, a symbol of progressive struggle. And can be seen on the dorm room walls or on the tee shirts of young progressives.
Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Hitler, Stalin and Mao, practiced one form of progressive thought or another. The great leap forward, now there was a progressive idea, if ever there was one. Unfortunately for the Chinese, it worked out worse than the American progressive experiment with Prohibition. American progressive are less prone to violence than thier progressive brothers around the world, I will give them that.
When George Bush said Islam was a religion of peace, that was "progressive" of him (out of touch with reality) he just wished it were true.
When Obama invited members of the, at the time, outlawed in Egypt, Muslim brotherhood to attend his Cairo speech, it can be said to be "progressive" of him to do so. ( I do not claim to know his motivation)
One of the first goals of the progressives, was to replace religious dogma with science, logic and reason. Long overdue in my opinion. It succeeded, but it's replaced religious dogma, with a left leaning progressive dogma. That is just as detached from a common reality, as Roman Catholic Catechisms were as they were taught in Sunday school, at the start of the nineteenth century.
Political activism has drawn the University of California into an academic death spiral. Too many professors believe their job is to "advance social justice" rather than teach the subject they were hired to teach. Groupthink has replaced lively debate. Institutions that were designed to stir intellectual curiosity aren't challenging young minds. They're churning out "ignorance." http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/04/01/INLN1MNUVT.DTL
While the Church has moved on (?), updated somewhat. Many aspects of progressiveness have remained rooted in it's unorthodox underpinnings as an Utopian concept of belief, striving for a wild eyed seemingly unobtainable goal. Social engineering, euthenics, having all of the answers to all of the questions, is, it self, elitist in nature. And all are progressive concepts.
Replacing religious education. That was the one of the original goals of the movement. Because religions had a bad habit of claiming to have all of the answers, yet not being able to produce the answers, when questioned strenuously about them. The very same place, coincidentally, some modern progressives find themselves in now, when questioned (about their memes)
just how are all cultures equal and valid, and must be respected as such.
what if you are a gay, or lesbian atheist, living in the middle east, in an Islamic society?
How ironic. The silence, the lack of any reasonable intelligent response.
No Utopian concept works out in the long run. Humans are fallible creatures, they are not aways right. Some progressive ideas that did not pan out, would be, the income tax, It was ruled unconstitutional, but progressives added the sixteenth amendment. Why let the Constitution get in the way of a good progressive idea.(Obama care anyone) Lets all stand up and clap and give a big hand to progressives for that.(NOT).
That Prohibition thing, eighteenth amendment, did not work out as planed. It was supposed to cut down on crime, and stabilize the families of middle class Americans. It would do this, it was said by ridding them of the evil of alcohol. (Alcohol was defined by progressives as evil) They never were required to produce empirical evidence, proving a liquid can in fact, be evil. Whoops, overlooked that little detail. Please forget about the shattered lives, the killings in the street, the raise of organised crime and the need for increased police powers needed to fight a problem we created. Progressives had the best of intentions, they meant well., isn't that what matters?
Not providing all of the available information, Or exaggerated information, is a founding principles of progressive thought. Upton Sinclair was the most famous muckraker of his day.
We still have muckrakers today. But the targets of today's muckraker is far less threatening (Dartmouth university?) Often an innocuous target is chosen for a vile attack out of all proportion to the claimed offence. Muckrakers no longer fight tyranny or injustice, they attack ideas or concepts offencive to them on an intellectual level. With an attack, you do not need to supply a reasoned argument, you only need to demonize your opponent. We can thank the great progressive Saul Alinsky for that. Hilary Cliton was inspired by Saul. Inspired in what way, I don't have a clue. The memes of Saul Alinsky don't inspire me, they frighten me.
Saul's Utopian concept is unobtainable, as the human animal in not capable of reaching perfection or sustaining it if ever reached.
We do not have child labor, Government employees are not like the un-unionised coal miners of yesterday, women have the vote (seventeenth amendment),slavery has been abolished (in the west) Progressives pretend not to notice these profound societal changes. We have a man who has an African father, siting in the white house, his attorney general is a man of color as well. Arguably the two most powerful men in America, were at one time viewed as less than human, and unfit to participate in our democracy.(Hat tip progressives.) But I feel I most point out some of the lesser, embarrassing concepts (memes or ideas) of progressives.
In the beginning, it's (progressiveness) goals and objectives were in fact noble and worthy ideological positions, some worked out as intended, and we should all be thankful. Namely, for better working conditions, a women's right to participate in the political process, the abolition of slavery. Progressive theories every one, the world is a far better place because of them.
As I said, there is that bad (progressive) habit of leaving out critical information.( Progressives in the high school curriculum, teaching guide ) Sorry but that's like letting the Catholic Church teach doctrine, and never questioning itself, or it's authenticity.
Progressives ruthlessly attack capitalism now, but at one time they walked hand in hand, down a progressive path together.
Big, Bad Business
For the wealthy classes, the businessmen, entrepreneurs and those generally referred to as “capitalists” or “robber barons,” the motivation to support progressive reform can be included under the heading of the aforementioned enlightened self interest. They recognized the need for reform partly because of the attention to social and working conditions paid by sociologists and others. These “human engineers” recognized that pushing workers relentlessly was not the path to greater efficiency.
It is a well-known fact of business practice today that providing workers with benefits, rest periods, more comfortable working conditions and amenities leads to greater productivity and thus greater profits in the long term. While those motives may be seen as selfish, they were also enlightened to the extent that they made the lives of the working classes more tolerable. Additionally, the proprietary or ownership class of businessmen also recognized that if reforms were not instituted from the top, they would certainly begin at the bottom, as had been demonstrated during the labor unrest of the late 19th century. Thus businessmen, who wanted most of all to preserve the capitalist system, eventually welcomed progressive reform.
One of the best examples of a businessman reformer was Henry Ford, a millionaire capitalist responsible for the assembly line and other major advances in automobile production. As the first entrepreneur to pay his workers five dollars a day, he led the movement for better conditions for workers. Rather than running the Ford Motor Company from an aloof position, he often wandered through production areas, asking workers how they were doing. Ford was no saint, but he was a leader in improving conditions for the working class.http://www.academicamerican.com/progressive/topics/progressive.html
In 1920 Ford began publishing the "facts" in the pages of a newspaper he owned, the Dearborn Independent– "the Ford International Weekly" - which circulated widely among his fans and customers, from New York to Los Angeles, from St. Paul to Houston, reaching a circulation of 700,000 in 1924. Ford-paid hacks produced dozens of anti-Semitic articles through the '20s, commenting on many aspects of culture, harping on the notion of a destructive conspiracy afoot in the land. A typical headline: "Jewish Jazz – Moron Music – Becomes Our National Music: Story of 'Popular Song' Control in the United States."
The newspaper’s articles were collected in book form under the title "The International Jew." This volume was widely translated. It sold well in Germany in the 1920s and early '30s as the Nazis sought support. Among the readers were the industrialists of the Ruhr Valley, who regarded Henry Ford as a god, and whose support was crucial to Hitler.
In 1927 Ford abruptly stopped his attacks on Jews, sold his newspaper, and apologized for his newspaper’s rhetoric, having been pressured to do so by a court case, meanwhile claiming he was "too busy" to read the contents of the massively popular newspaper he owned. In 1939 he urged Americans to welcome Jewish refugees. But he waited until 1942 to try to suppress publication of "The International Jew," and he claimed that Jewish bankers helped foment the Second World War.
Then came the reckoning. In the spring of 1945 Ford watched film of a Nazi deathcamp. He was stunned and was stricken ill; perhaps it suddenly hit him in the gut that he, Henry Ford, had helped create a climate in which the most terrible crime of modern history could occur. The author Max Wallace notes that Ford's ideas "imbue" Hitler's manifesto "Mein Kampf," and writes, "Historian Albert Lee believes that, while Ford did not necessarily inspire Hitler's hatred of the Jews, he lent him a framework for his burgeoning anti-Semitism."
Would the Nazis have risen to power without help from Henry Ford? The question cannot be answered with accuracy, but it's worth pondering
Hitler was a proponent of the American euthenics philosophy, vegetarianism, state control of citizens diet, gun control, and he was an anti-smoking fascist, long before it became popular. Hitler was an animal right activist, way before PETA, but could care less about human rights, but animals had rights.
( http://press.princeton.edu/titles/6573.html) Hitler was in fact, quite the little progressive in his own right.
This is from Project Gutenberg EBook of The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels
It's meant to question some socialist, communist, progressive, share the wealth memes, so popular now.
The Socialist and Communist literature of France, a literature that originated under the pressure of a bourgeoisie in power, andthat was the expression of the struggle against this power, was introduced into Germany at a time when the bourgeoisie, in thatcountry, had just begun its contest with feudal absolutism.
German philosophers, would-be philosophers, and beauxe sprits, eagerly seized on this literature, only forgetting, that whenthese writings immigrated from France into Germany, French social conditions had not immigrated along with them.
The memes or ideas of this philosophy, had nothing to do with the situation in Germany in the eighteenth century, but Marx and Engels ran with it anyways in the middle of the nineteenth century . This destructive meme, has never been made useful. It's cost millions of lives in a futile attempt to implement it, in China, Russia, Cuba,India, and North Korea. Not forgetting for a second, that if it had nothing to do with German social conditions before Marx wrote this crappy manifesto. Just how is wealth equity (sharing the wealth meme) relevant in the twenty first century America I live in?
In contact with German social conditions, this French literature lost all its immediate practical significance, and assumed a purely literary aspect. Thus, to the German philosophers of the eighteenth century, the demands of the first French Revolution were nothing more than the demands of "Practical Reason" in general, and the utterance of the will of the revolutionary French bourgeoisiesignified in their eyes the law of pure Will, of Will as it wasbound to be, of true human Will generally.
Some "news" organisations, are little more than propaganda organs of progressive opinion.
On Wednesday, Inside Cable Newsreleased an on MSNBC’s failed rebranding effort to a news and information destination in the daysideand the cable network’s subsequent rebirth into one dominated by progressive opinion and analysis.
Here is what some may say is a biased look at progressivism.
THE PROGRESSIVE MOVEMENT
The Progressive Movement began late in the 19th Century. Its Central Tenets are Statism, Income Redistribution, Unionism, Government Management of the Economy, womb to tomb provision for its citizens, and a Libertine Social Policy. To accomplish these aims, The Progressive Movement believes in State Ownership of Businesses—instead of Entrepreneurial Free Enterprise; Central Planning by the Government of the supply of goods and services, including fixing prices of wages, and of goods and services—instead of Free Market Capitalism; That all Citizens should have equal wealth except for the Elite Rulers; And that Sovereignty does not belong to Individual Citizens—but that the People only exist for the benefit of the National State. Various large parts of this Ideology are identical to Socialism and Fascism, including the ideas that the use of courts, bureaucracies—even the police and military—should be used to accomplish goals that would never be approved by a Democracy or a Republic (such as The United States of America under its current Constitution).
The Daily Kos is on-board the progressive bandwagon with Van Jones, a committed communist.
What I mean is very specific. What I saw this weekend was a recognition that the progressive movement needs to evolve. Our job is to rebuild an American Dream for the 21st century - to defend those who are being denied that dream, ensure that everyone is included in it,
I want no part of this particular progressive dream, making me a classic enemy of the people.(LOL)
and that we construct a society where our highest value is making sure we provide the support people need to achieve their own dreams.
If we are going to do that, we need to not only speak a collective language - we must start acting collectively. The siloed, competitive, individual nature of the progressive movement has to be shed in favor of something that is networked, collaborative, and collective.
Van Jones'speech on Saturday, perhaps one of the most important statements made in the young history of our movement, was a moment where as my friend Sara Robinson said to me immediately afterward, "something shifted in the universe." But his speech was just the verbalization of something that had been percolating all weekend. A sense that it was time for the netroots to outgrow its younger clothes and start taking leadership in the struggle to rebuild our society and beat back the forces of darkness.http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/06/21/987189/-Rebooting-the-Progressive-Movement
Before you can rebuild, you have to go through the "burn the muther f**ker down" phase. That's the phase American is in now.
But, have no fear, Van and the government will be there in your darkest hour, ready to lend a helping hand.
Counter punch is a classic progressive publication.
CounterPunch is a bi-weekly newsletter published in the United States that covers politics in a manner its editors describe as "muckraking with a radical attitude". Other sources have described it as left-wing, and extreme.
Running six to eight pages in length, the CounterPunch newsletter primarily publishes commentaries by Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair with regular contributions by a wide range of others. It is noted for its critical coverage of both Democratic and Republican politicians and its extensive reporting of environmental and trade union issues, American foreign policy, and the Israeli-Arab conflict..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CounterPunch
I now wish to remind everybody of the anti Semitic memes, that run throughout the certain type of progressiveness founded in the nineteenth and twentieth century in Germany. If you look up the writers of counter punch.
you will find many of the memes contained in their articles, claiming an unfavorable Jewish interest in American politics, to the detriment of America's vital interests. Ward Churchill is a 9/11 truther, who thinks the "Jews" did it. Edward Said while still alive, tossed rocks at Israelis, he had such uncontrollable contempt for them.
Wilhelm Marrwasoneof a number of writers and agitators, pseudo-philosophers, who believed that Jews were intent on taking over Germany as well as Europe with alienvaluesandsensibilities. They were especially obsessed with advancing the idea that there was a Jewish plot to control banks and finance. This was an expansion of a traditional antipathy toward Jews as money lenders, the pre-emancipation occupation to which Jews were consigned by the Church. Therein lay the grain of truth contained in anyconspiracy theory, and it was an easy accusation to use as a platform especially among artisans and small business owners with whom Jews had often had a fractious relationship. There were others of the same bent — the composer Richard Wagner, his son-in-law, Houston Stewart Chamberlain, Joseph Arthur, Comte de Gobineau and Edouard Adolphe Drumont.
Marr’s most famous work “Der Sieg des Judenthums über das Germanenthum von nicht Confessionellen Standpunkt” (The Victory of Judaism over Germandom: From a Non-Denominational Point of View) laid the groundwork for an organization he called the League of Anti-Semites. Semitism, according to Marr, was the replacement of German values, ways and sensibilities with Jewish ones http://www.crethiplethi.com/what-is-anti-semitism/antisemitism/2012/
Media matters is progressive source of information, so it attacks Jewish people in America and Israel with age old anti Semitic canards, has a derogatory opinion of "christian values" and is attempting to purge them from public discourse in America.
Rosenberg routinely uses the label, "Israel Firsters," implying that American supporters put the interests of Israel above the United States. It's a charge commonly made by Neo-Nazis and anti-Semitic groups.
And now part of the progressive democratic platform?
"We don't see any condemnation of his hate language coming from Media Matters, and we've yet to notice any shift in editorial policies," Brog said. "For all we know, they've said goodbye to the man but not the message."
"I call upon all my friends on the left who love Israel, who hate anti-Semitism, to speak up," he admonished. "Your silence is deafening. You're letting your compatriots get away with the vilest of accusations."
Treasury Department documents — 88 pages that The Daily Caller obtained through a public records request to the IRS — reveal for the first time how the organization described its mission while applying for coveted 501(c)(3) non-profit status.
Media Matters has made no secret of its adherence to progressive principles, but flagging Christianity as having undue influence in media is the latest revelation about the group’s treatment of religion. (RELATED: Complete coverage of Media Matters for America)
The Democratic-aligned ARCA Foundationspecifically supplied Media Matters with a $50,000 grant in 2006 “to support a Religious Broadcasting Project to expand the monitoring and fact checking of religious broadcasts,” The DC reported in February.
A present-day search of the Media Matters website for the terms “religion” and “Christianity” yields a steady stream of anti-Christian criticism and posts aimed at dismissing Christians’ religious concern over President Obama’s contraception mandate.
Another search revealed a large number of articles critical of perceived “Islamophobia.” http://dailycaller.com/2012/04/16/media-matters-targets-revealed-business-wealth-christianity/
how progressive of them, being so concerned with Islamophobia and all.Is that a progressive meme as well.
Not providing all of the available information is a progressive attribute used to further an agenda.
MSNBC is a progressive news outlet, would they report on a subject without any research, would it be as if the reporter had just heard of such a thing yesterday, and had no way to investigate further. The reporter may have asked himself, if the child rape (marriage) could be a systemic occurrence supported by religious dogma in a theocracy.Saudi Arabia is a religious theocracy, it may have a wee little bit of cause and effect going on.
In an effort to not be labeled Islamophobic, MSNBC withheld some of the pertinent information from you. Preventing you from forming an opinion, with all information available.
Placing a limit ( on marriage) over the age of nine years of age, would be seen in an Islamic nation as a condemnation of the actions of the Islamic prophet Mohammad.
the Quran says Mohammad is an exemplary standard of conduct, and all Muslims would do well to emulate his actions.(link)
If you say there is inherently something wrong with having sex with little girls, instead of letting them play with their dolls. You in effect, are calling Mohammad a pedophile, and you may upset a large segment of the Islamic world. You know the "true believers" the Jihadists, the suicide bombers, the fundamentalist practitioners of the faith.
